Today, the Town of Waldheim announced that construction recently began on the community’s estimated $10 million project to build a new water treatment plant and to complete related distribution upgrades for the utility.
The project involves building a new water treatment plant, which incorporates expanding the existing ground water supply, the addition of greensand filtration followed by reverse osmosis treatment, along with additional reservoir capacity and associated works.
The project also includes upgrades such as the replacement of various water and sewer mains, valves, hydrants and associated infrastructure to improve the resiliency and safety of the distribution and collection systems. The project is targeted to be completed and operational by the fall of 2021.
Under the New Building Canada Fund – Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component – National and Regional Projects, the Government of Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan will each contribute up to $3,187,854. The Town of Waldheim is responsible to fund the remaining $3,624,292 of the project and any additional costs.
“Cleaner water for the people of Waldheim will improve the well-being of residents, help protect the environment, and support sustainable, long-term growth in the community. Canada’s Infrastructure plan invests in thousands of projects, creates jobs across Canada and builds stronger communities,” said the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities.
“The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to help this initiative become a reality by investing more than $3.1 million toward this Town of Waldheim project, which will improve this key local utility for years to come. The province recognizes investing in infrastructure improves quality of life for all Saskatchewan residents, which is why our government’s $7.5 billion, two-year provincial capital plan will also help stimulate economic recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and build a stronger Saskatchewan,” said Mr. Randy Weekes, MLA for Biggar-Sask Valley, on behalf of the Honourable Lori Carr, Minister of Government Relations.
“Thanks to federal, provincial and Town of Waldheim funding, along with the support of our local council and residents, this project is now beginning to become a reality. Once this work is completed and fully operational, our quality of water, related infrastructure and opportunities for growth will be improved, which will benefit all who call Waldheim home today and tomorrow,” said His Worship John Bollinger, Mayor of the Town of Waldheim.
