Public Works Weekly Update

April 15, 2020 By Public Works

April 12-18, 2020

Road Surfaces

This is the time of year when most of our pavement damage happens due to freeze/thaw cycles on the pavement, and from motorists driving on the edges of the roads. Here are some tips to protect our roads (and in the end, save taxpayer’s money):

  1. Avoid driving on the softer edges of the pavement, this prevents the edges of the pavement from crumbling and breaking up.
  2. This is especially important when going around corners, cutting corners not only breaks the pavement but creates ruts that hold water and start a hydraulic damage process.
  3. Push your garbage bin far enough out into the road, making sure the wheels are fully on the pavement. The Loraas truck is extremely heavy and hard on our pavement, if it has to drive close to the edges to pick up garbage bins it causes ruts and breakage on the pavement edges.

Water Treatment Plant/Infrastructure Upgrades

We have been working with our engineers and are very close to tendering out the project. Once a successful bidder is approved, work will begin. What that will look like in light of the current Covid-19 precautions, we are not sure, but the process is still moving ahead which is exciting. We will continue to keep you updated via our website and Facebook pages.

Red Bird Communications – Fibre optic Services

You will see Public Works and Red Bird trucks out working next to roadways and in front of properties. They are continuing with their project to bring fibre optic services to the town, working to install fibre into the lines they pulled last fall. They will continue to install the network to the rest of the town once the spring thaw is over.
